Stroller and Diaper Bag on the Plane: How It Works

With most airlines, a stroller or buggy can fly for free. You hand it in at the check-in desk or take it with you to the gate. There it goes into the hold. Whether the diaper bag may come along as an extra differs per airline. Rules change, so always check your airline's site before your flight.

In short

  • A stroller or buggy almost always goes for free, but in the hold and not in the cabin.
  • A small foldable buggy can often come with you to the gate. A large stroller you hand in at the check-in desk.
  • With easyJet and KLM, a baby on your lap may bring their own bag in the cabin. With Transavia the diaper bag goes in your own hand luggage.
  • A car seat on board is only possible if your baby has their own seat, and it must be approved.
  • The information per airline below was checked in September 2026. Always look again before you leave.

How does taking a stroller on the plane work?

It works the same way at almost every airline. There are two routes:

  1. Hand it in at the check-in desk. Your large stroller then travels as hold luggage. You pick it up at the arrival airport at the baggage belt. The downside: you have no stroller at the airport. Take a baby carrier with you.
  2. Take it to the gate. This is usually only possible with a small, foldable buggy. Just before boarding, staff take it from you. It travels in the hold.

Whether you get it back at the aircraft door or at the baggage belt after landing differs per airline and airport. Count on the baggage belt, then it always turns out fine.

Tip: protect your stroller with a sturdy cover or bag. Fasten loose parts, such as a carrycot or seat, or pack them together. That way nothing gets lost on the way.

Ryanair stroller and buggy: what do you check?

For Ryanair we could not properly verify the official information in September 2026. That is why we do not state any concrete rules here. If you are looking for the Ryanair baggage rules for your baby, look at the Ryanair site yourself under travelling with children and keep these questions in mind:

  • How many baby items may come along for free, and which ones?
  • May you take your buggy to the gate, or do you hand it in at the desk?
  • May an extra bag come along for your baby, and which sizes apply?
  • May your baby travel in their own seat with a car seat?

Ask the same questions at any other airline. That way you know exactly what to expect at the airport.

Which diaper bag do you take on the plane?

On the plane your baby sits on your lap and your bag is at your feet. You often have only one hand free. A bag that stays open really helps then: you see right away where the diaper, the pacifier or the bottle is. A backpack keeps your hands free to fold the buggy or hold your baby.

Compare the size of your bag with your airline's rules. For comparison:

On paper both fit within easyJet's baby bag and KLM's hand luggage for a baby. A full bag can get thicker, though, so don't pack too much. With Transavia the diaper bag counts as your own hand luggage.

Both bags have the Stay-Open™ frame, an insulated pocket for the bottle and an anti-theft pocket on the back for passports and boarding passes. With the free stroller clips you hang the bag on the buggy up to the gate. What else you put in it, you can read in the diaper bag as hand luggage when flying with a baby.

Checklist before you leave

  • Read the rules for babies and children on your airline's site, shortly before your flight.
  • Weigh your stroller or buggy and measure it folded.
  • Measure your diaper bag and compare it with the permitted sizes.
  • Pack baby food separately, so you can show it quickly at security.
  • Bring a baby carrier if your stroller already goes into the hold at the desk.
  • Label your stroller with your name and phone number.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stroller fly for free?

With most airlines, yes. Transavia, easyJet and KLM state on their sites that a stroller or buggy for your child may come along for free, with their own rules for weight and size. Check your airline's site beforehand.

Can you take a buggy to the gate?

Often yes, if it is a small foldable buggy. With KLM it must be a maximum of 15 x 30 x 100 cm folded, with Transavia a maximum of 10 kilos. At the gate, staff take it over for the hold.

Can you bring an extra diaper bag on the plane?

That differs per airline. With easyJet a baby on your lap may bring an extra baby bag, with KLM their own piece of hand luggage. With Transavia the diaper bag goes in your own hand luggage.

What are the Ryanair baggage rules for a stroller?

We could not verify Ryanair's official information in September 2026, so we state no rules. Look at the Ryanair site under travelling with children before you fly.

Can a car seat come on the plane?

As hold luggage often yes. Using it on board is usually only possible if your baby has their own seat and the car seat is approved for use on aircraft.

A backpack that stays open and hangs on your buggy makes flying with a baby a lot calmer. Take a look at the MIMMTI diaper backpacks and choose what suits your trip.
